Step-by-Step Instructions
- Warm 1 cup of milk until just warm to the touch. Sprinkle 2 teaspoons of active dry yeast over it and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 4 cups of flour and ½ cup of sugar. Then, add the activated yeast mixture, 3 large eggs, ½ cup of softened unsalted butter, and the zest of one lemon or orange. Stir until a rough dough forms.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the kneaded dough in a lightly greased bowl, covering it. Set it in a warm area and let it rise for about 1½ to 2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- After the dough has risen, punch it down gently and divide it into three equal portions. Roll each into a rope about 16-18 inches long and braid them together.
- Transfer the braided loaf to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Press your hard-boiled, dyed eggs into the woven sections of the braid.
- Cover the shaped bread loosely and allow it to rise again in a warm place for about 30-45 minutes, or until puffy.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F. Whisk together 1 egg and a splash of milk or water for the egg wash. Brush this over the loaf. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden.
- Once baked, remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
